Bottle Palm Tree Care

View Full Planting & Care Instructions angle down icon
plant sunlight

Sunlight Plant your Bottle Palm in an area that receives full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day).

plant watering

Watering Water your Palm 2-3 times per week for the first month, then once a week for the remainder of the first year after planting. Keep the soil moist but well-drained, watering more in times of drought and less when there is rainfall.

plant fertilizing

Fertilizing If necessary, use a palm-specific fertilizer for your Palm. Slow-release fertilizer is best to allow the smaller root system to uptake what it needs. Apply close to the base and start in spring/follow specific fertilizer instructions.

Easy to Grow and Maintain

Prized for its one-of-a-kind look, the Bottle Palm sets itself apart, with a trunk shaped like an antique bottle of Caribbean rum and a standout silhouette that adds immediate value to gardens.

As it matures, this amazing palm becomes more and more bottle-shaped. Fronds depart, and the “bottle” gains shapely rings. So, you'll watch the Bottle Palm become more interesting and beautiful with age. The fully grown, stout “bottle” even becomes smooth. You’ll immediately benefit from an eye-catching tropical accent with a surprising array of features.

And with the Bottle Palm, your garden is a relaxing, tropical-inspired oasis. The Bottle Palm only grows 4 to 6 fronds with arched, feather-shaped leaves. This small number of fronds means that the palm won't compete for space, making it a great choice for busy garden beds.

If you care well for your Bottle Palm by growing it in temperatures above freezing, with water and mulch, the no-nonsense plant rarely needs trimming. The Bottle Palm is an easy choice for growers who want to create a personal paradise with little work.

Even better? The Palm is perfect for both pools and shorelines. Bottle Palms have been tested on the coastlines of South Florida, Southern California and Hawaii, where they are easy to grow and maintain. The unique palm tree easily withstands salty air and ocean spray and is also naturally resistant to insects, disease and chlorine.

Occasionally water its leaves, and your Bottle Palm will be a shapely, healthy companion for your indoor pool, outdoor pool, or seashore patio. Just imagine spending long afternoons basking by the water, as the dwarf Bottle Palm catches a light breeze and filters dappled shade on your tropical drink.

Plus, the Bottle Palm thrives as well in a container as it does in the ground. Because it’s a slow grower and has a shallow, small root ball, this palm tree doesn't need constant repotting. Expect the same Bottle Palm to thrive in one pot for many years. You can freely plant 2 to 4 palms together in a large container for a sensational, eye-catching centerpiece that will enhance sunny entryways, living rooms, home offices—and any other spot you’d like to highlight.

Don’t miss out on this unique palm tree. Order soon, while supplies last!

Planting & Care

1. Planting: You don't have to immediately repot your plant - you'll only need to repot approximately every other year, once your Palm outgrows its shipped container or original pot. Increase the pot size by 2 inches each time you repot to accommodate new growth.

If growing outdoors make sure you give the palm well-draining soil and adequate space above to grow.

2. Watering: Mist your Palm weekly if kept indoors in addition to regular watering – this ensures that its native humid climate is simulated in your home. If you're not sure when to water, simply check the soil about 2 inches down. If the soil is dry here, it's time to water.

FGT Tip: If fronds begin to yellow, it could be a sign of overwatering. If you see yellowed fronds, allow time for the soil to dry before watering your plant again. Browning fronds, however, mean that your Palm is not getting enough water and needs more. Using a well-draining potting mix is key in getting this balance.

3. Pruning: Simply any fronds as they turn yellow or brown. This improves the look of your plant and creates clean space for healthier green fronds to grow.

4. Fertilizing: You can apply palm fertilizers that contain specific nutrients best suited for palms. If you prefer, you can also use a balanced fertilizer, such as an 8-8-8 formula, for quicker growth in spring and summer.

Fast Growing Trees Does Not Stand By Its Product

We purchased 2 Bottle Palms from Fast Growing Trees. The palms did not look very healthy when we received them but we planted them with hopes that they might improve. They never improved! We had planted 150 other plants that same month and all of them are doing well with new buds or blooms. We followed all the instructions for watering, soil, and sunlight for these trees. These palms have continued to gradually get more brown over the past few months. When I contacted Fast Growing Trees about the issue, I was told that I need to pay additional to purchase warranty to replace these plants! I shared several photos and details about where they are planted. It is evident that we did not miss anything in planting and taking care of these plants. If the plants that were sent to us were not healthy, then I should not need the warranty to get a replacement for them. The warranty would make sense if the plants were initially doing well and then did not continue to grow. 150 other plants on our property have done well except for these 2 bottle palms bought from Fast Growing Trees. I do not believe that I should have to pay additional for a warranty to get healthy plants.

We're very sorry that these plants didn't make it! It looks like they were purchased outside of their recommended growing zone which is why they did not make it through the winter, we apologize and will reach out privately to see how we can help.
